Actually the insert is used for machining steel and aluminum so you can imagine how long it stays sharp turning wood.The 1/2" diameter carbide insert can be rotated to a expose a new cutting surface making it brand new many times over. Replacement carbide inserts are available.24" length handle is solid 5/8 cold rolled steel rod with a rubber golf club grip. This gives you great control over the tool making it a pleasure to use. Works great for turning, facing and hollowing. I even use it to rough my turnings. Since it's so sharp it leaves a great surface finish with virtually no tearout.
